Pesto verde – green basil pesto

Quick Italian lesson: "verde" means "green" Our pesto verde's name comes from it's colour and the ingredients used, in this case, 31 % Italian basil. We add a bit of sunflower oil, cashews, tofu, pine nuts, some garlic and a pinch of salt and our pesto is ready!  Okay so that's what vegan pesto is made of, but now back to the question of what pesto actually is! Pesto comes from Italy and is an uncooked, pasty sauce that is usually served with pasta. The first traditional pesto was made as early as 1863 and is thought to be derived from a Roman herb and cheese sauce - or a medieval variation of a standard Roman condiment. The best-known variety is probably "pesto Genovese", which contains pine nuts and Parmesan cheese as well as basil. Red pesto is also delicious and available in our shop. It is called "pesto rosso", because rosso = red. The aromatic sauce gets its colour from tomato paste. As the icing on the cake, cheese is usually added to the pesto pasta dishes. For the vegan version, we recommend adding our delicious nutritional yeast flakes to our vegan green pesto to make it a basil pesto without any cheese.

Delicious recipes with vegan pesto verde – vegan pesto pasta

Pesto and pasta belong together, just like dates and hazelnuts.  But if you think pesto only works with spaghetti, tortellini, penne and the like, you are mistaken! Have you ever eaten pesto with potatoes, refined your pizza or salad with it? Have you slathered it on your bread or enjoyed it in lasagna or perhaps added it to chicken dishes? If not, it's high time you did! There are countless ways to use the green wonder... We have some ideas for you: Ever heard of a pesto flower? It's a real party hit! First make a dough with flour, yeast, water, some salt and oil, divide it into three parts and roll them all out into a circle. Then spread the first circle with our green (or red) pesto, place the second circle on top, spread the pesto again and place the third circle on top. Now cut the "cake" into equal parts and twist the individual pieces until they form a flower shape. You can find pictures of the whole thing on the internet. Simply delicious!

Climate impact

At KoRo, we analyse the greenhouse gas emissions that are produced during the production of our snacks. These include, among other things, CO2, methane and nitrous oxide. Our hard-working sustainability team collects all the information to calculate a value: the so-called CO2 equivalents. We are now passing this information on to you so that you can make informed purchasing decisions and keep an eye on your personal carbon footprint. We also use these valuable findings ourselves, to try to make our supply chains even smarter in the future and monitor our CO2 footprint.

CO₂ emissions by product

To make the work of our sustainability team easier, we have teamed up with the company Cozero. They support us with their decarbonisation software to calculate the CO2 emissions of our products. Our products go through a lot before they make their way into your pantry or snack bowl, so there is a lot to take into consideration: production, packaging, and logistics – to name just the big steps.

CO₂ emission per product in comparison

Would you like to find out how well your favourite snack stacks up against other products in terms of carbon footprint? Say no more! To create comparability, we calculated the CO₂ emissions per 1 kg of our products and compared them with other products that end up on many people's plates every day, such as cheese, tofu, and many more. We also included coffee as a drink for comparison. So no matter if it is your favourite snack or your go-to kitchen product, you are now able to see exactly how it performs in our “CO₂ per kg of product” ranking.

From what we know, there is nothing against enjoying pesto in normal quantities even when pregnant. To be on the safe side, however, we recommend you always ask your doctor for advice.
Unlike conventional pesto, our pesto is vegan. It is also super easy to use; in no time you can conjure up delicious dishes without having to stand long in the kitchen. We get our pesto – how could it be otherwise – directly from Italy: the aroma is wonderfully aromatic and tastes pleasantly of fresh basil and sunshine. Enough reasons? Hurry up and taste for yourself!
The original recipe of pesto is with Parmesan, an Italian hard cheese.
100 g of our vegan pesto verde have 509 kcal.
Cool, dry and protected from heat, it's the way your pesto likes it. After opening, you should use it within 10 days.
We've already done that for you, you rascal! But of course we'll still tell you how you can make pesto yourself. The best way is to use a mortar or a high-performance blender. You throw in ingredients of your choice (classically basil, parmesan, oil, spices, pine nuts) and mix for all you're worth. Your own pesto is ready!
Pesto is a traditional Italian recipe and is an uncooked basil and pine nuts based sauce that is usually served with pasta. However, its use is enormously varied, because pesto is also unbeatably delicious with salads, to refine sauces, and on pizza.
So many things! Apart from matching it to your favourite pasta, you can also enjoy it on bread, with potatoes, fish and meat, conjure up a pesto cream sauce, spice up your salad, or bake a hearty pesto bread braid. Let your ideas bubble!
Si! Our pesto is vegan because we do not use cheese. Instead, we rely on cashews and tofu!

It's great that it's vegan. Still needs a little bit of oil

Great taste, we had to add a little oil as it was a little too crumbly.

This makes the pasta taste good even without cheese.

I'm delighted to have found a delicious vegan pesto that isn't immediately empty. You don't miss the parmesan at all.

Lemon nut pesto is more like it

You have to look for the basil. It feels like the pesto consists of 3 basil leaves, 1 liter of lemon juice and too many pine nuts. I don't understand why there's supposed to be tofu in it either.l, probably fills the jar a bit more. Unfortunately, the taste is a far cry from a pesto verde. I also don't understand why SONNENBLUMEN oil is used, but if you want a lemon-nut pesto, you will certainly be happy with this jar. If you are looking for a basil pesto, I would advise against it.

Unfortunately many hard dry husks inside

I was unfortunately very disappointed with my glass which I bought here were almost like wood husks in it! Please check the production! It is very unpleasant when there are dry hard stems of basil in it and these then get stuck in the mouth, very dangerous for children. The taste was great but didn't want to eat any more as it felt like it was happening with every spoonful. Too bad.
